Strategy in chess is described as setting and achieving long term goals throughout the game while tactics is considered to involve immediate maneuvers. Therefore, strategic goals are achieved by a means of tactics and tactical chances are presented on sound strategical play.

Chess is categorized into 3 phases. The “opening” phase is considered to be between the 1st 10 to 25 moves. Here, players organize their formations for the coming game. The “middle game” phase follows and is considered the ‘meat of the game. The “endgame” phase begins when the majority of pieces have been captured. Generally, this involves the kings taking a more active part in the game.
